THE BEST CAFÉS IN COLOMBIA TO ENJOY A COFFEE

Posted by: Marca Colombia

Everyone loves Colombia’s Juan Valdez coffee shops, with their tintos, malteadas and cappuccinos on every corner and their familiar cakes and pastries, overseen by “Juan” and his beloved donkey, Conchita. Butindependent coffee shops are all the rage in Colombia these days too and baristas across the country are battling to bring you the best-brewed beans. (You can also read Colombian coffee, the best in the world) Here are some of our favorites cafés in Colombia:

CAFÉ PERGAMINO

Medellin is Colombia's pulsing second city, in the heart of the coffee district, so it's no wonder it's a great place to grab a decent brew. The people at Pergamino really are experts, dispensing both coffee and knowledge from this café in Via Primera, El Poblado. They roast their beans locally and use all kinds of fancy equipment, with highly-trained baristas on hand to explain to customers exactly what is happening. They also run tasting sessions and host barista tournaments too.

Amor Perfecto

Amor Perfecto is perfect for coffee fans, especially those looking for new, obscure beans. The people here know their stuff – Amor Perfecto was the first coffee shop in Colombia to enter one of its baristas in the Baristas' World Championship and boasts National Champions among its staff. Besides providing an oasis of calm in Colombia's famously frenetic capital, Amor Perfecto has another trick up its sleeve – single malt whisky pairings have been matched to every coffee. You have been warned.

Ábaco Libros y Café

The cultured Caribbean city of Cartagena famously stole the heart of Colombia's Nobel Literature laureate, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, so it's fitting that the best place in town for a coffee is a book shop. And not just any book shop –Ábaco is a much-loved, air-conditioned, bilingual bookshop/café tucked away in a corner of the walled city. Not only can you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee in this lovingly preserved old building, you'll be spoilt for reading choice too.

Macondo Postres y café

Cali is Colombia's salsa capital and famous for it's all-night rumbas that leave many a dance lover with a head as sore as their feet, which is probably why the city has Macondo, a coffee bar in the San Antonio district, ready to restore its revellers to their former glory. Macondo is as far from a typical coffee joint as you can get, dark and hidden from the outside, surprisingly light and airy on the inside. Macondo has a busy cultural events calendar and loves coffee so much, you can even order coffee lemonade.

La Canoa Café Cultural

Step out of Colombia for a second and say “Ooh la la” in this French patisserie in the unlikely setting of Colombia's Caribbean coast. La Canoa Café Cultural is a popular choice in Santa Marta's historic center, as much for its flaky, delicious pastries as for its perfectly brewed coffee. But while the croissants and profiteroles are purely Parisien, the coffee is all Colombian, served in a beautiful old building with a restored canoe serving as a table in the center. Enjoy!
